I have tried many times to get into Minecraft but to the chagrin of one of my friends I just do not vibe with the gameplay loop of the game or any other survival game for that matter. Minecraft Dungeons has virtually nothing in common with Minecraft other than sharing its visual aesthetic. It is essentially baby’s first dungeon crawler but that is ok as this may be a way to get your non gamer friend, partner or child into games. Other than the Lego games, this was the game that finally got my wife into video games. She is now a legit gamer that no scopes people in Call of Duty. While she has advanced from games that are this simple I will always appreciate that this game served to onboard her to the medium I love so much. Minecraft Dungeons is a top down dungeon crawler where you fight enemies and get loot. The dungeons are procedurally generated but it is really basic. The procedural generation is simple and really only changes the maps in minor ways. One run you will go left, the other you might go right. It is that simple. The game does not encourage exploration. I found myself going off the beaten path and almost always not finding anything, no treasure, nothing. There are so many dungeon crawlers that are better than this game and I would not recommend this for any veteran of the genre but if you like the look of Minecraft and are looking to play a game with a non gamer this is a simple, but enjoyable experience. Maybe like me you will be able to finally get your person into games through playing this. That potential makes Minecraft Dungeons valuable and worth playing.
