Children of Morta was my introduction to the now popular genre of roguelikes. While you can apply roguelike elements to any genre, this is a top down dungeon crawler with great combat and a surprisingly compelling story. The game follows the Bergson family who are guardians of Mount Morta. Their job is to fight back the corruption that is spreading over the lands. The story may sound generic however, it is executed well, with themes that explore the bonds that keep families together and what you are willing to sacrifice for the greater good. The story is drip fed to you each time you die. You unlock new family members each with their own skills and abilities. Once you unlock a family member, you learn about their backstory and what drives them between runs. The dungeons are procedurally generated. Typically, I’m not into this but the art style is so gorgeous and it does switch up the maps substantially so I didn’t mind. Each character is fun to play as and I loved experimenting with each and leveling them up between runs. This is not a punishing roguelike at all. You are constantly getting stronger. The game wants you to beat it so I recommend this for anyone that is new to the genre. There is a full couch co-op mode as well if that is your jam. While I have played more complex and demanding roguelikes since playing Children of Morta, I will always appreciate how this game got me into this rewarding and fun genre.
