High On Life

I am a huge Rick and Morty fan so I was surprised and disappointed at how little I laughed during this game.  The game certainly has its funny moments, the prologue in particular is hilarious but given how many jokes are thrown at you over the course of the playthrough, they don’t land nearly enough.  Obviously, comedy is subjective and I think many people will find this game hilarious.  Outside of being a comedy game, this is a very basic first person shooter.  The enemy variety is poor, the shooting doesn’t feel great, and the guns just aren’t that fun to use.  The talking guns quickly grated on me.  I am aware that the game allows you to turn down the frequency of the talking but I wanted to play the game as it was intended and didn’t want to miss any jokes.  The voice acting is great with Justin Roiland putting in what is most likely his last performance as well as the legend that is J.B. Smoove from one of my favorite shows Curb Your Enthusiasm.  As a long time fan of Rick and Morty I was primed to love this game, but I was mostly let down by both its humor and its gameplay.  If you are a fan of Roiland’s humor, you might like this but it’s far from a guarantee.  If you are looking for a tight first person shooter, look elsewhere.
