Supermassive’s output has been spotty, especially with the Dark Pictures Anthology and the recent The Casting of Frank Stone however, when they hit they hit. The Quarry is a strong follow up to Until Dawn. The games are similar, almost to a fault however, Supermassive have delineated the two games by touting that The Quarry sports 186 different endings. After playing it, it’s hard for me to believe that this game’s purported 186 endings are substantially different from one another but it is an ambitious effort nevertheless. The set up for The Quarry is similar to Until Dawn in that it surrounds a group of young people that meet up for a reunion of sorts. Instead of a snowy cabin, this game takes place in a lake side cabin. While writing this, I am actively realizing how derivative of Until Dawn The Quarry actually is. Whatever, I still enjoyed the game. Like Until Dawn (you’re going to see these 3 words more) and by extension 80’s style slasher movies the characters aren’t the most likeable bunch but that makes it all the more entertaining when they die in horrible ways. Like Until Dawn (fuck) you can find objects in the environment that serve as premonitions of potential deaths of characters. This allows you the ability to get some potential context to what might happen to a character, and may lead to you being more attentive and maybe saving a character’s life. As with my playthrough of Until Dawn (shit), most of the characters died before the end. I know some people play these games hoping for everyone to survive but I am the polar opposite. I do not go out of my way to kill these characters but if I mess up a quick time event and it ends with a character dying in a brutal way, I’m cool with it, happy even. I watch slasher movies for the kills, not for the characters or story and games like The Quarry provide that satisfaction in an interactive way that only video games as a medium can provide. If you liked Until Dawn (god dammit), you will like The Quarry since it is essentially the same game only with a different setting and characters. I played The Quarry and not Until Dawn, right? Fuck, I don’t know anymore.
