Are you ready to rip and tear? If so, I am happy to inform you that this entry in the series provides that same power fantasy that the other previous games in this reboot trilogy provides. This entry distinguishes itself from the others by making you feel like an unstoppable tank that is blasting around large battlefields zipping around the environments with a shield that essentially acts as a grappling hook and allows you to smash into far away enemies. The shield itself is the best part of the game and made me feel like I was playing an R- rated Captain America game. If I decided to play either 2016, or Eternal again, I am guessing I would absolutely miss the shield. Another mechanic that makes this entry unique is the parrying system. If you are intimidated by parrying systems, do not worry, the windows are generous and signposted well. The difficulty may be what makes this game divisive in the series. I played on the normal setting and compared to Eternal and even 2016 this campaign is an absolute cake walk. If you are a veteran to the series I highly recommend you play on the higher difficulties. Another possible point of contention will be Id’s decision to make this a more narrative based game. The narrative falls flat and I didn’t really understand or care what was happening in the story or who these new characters were. I have read and listened to other critics complaining about the story and amount of it that there is in this game. I disagree that this game has too many cutscenes. It really doesn’t have that many, they aren’t that long, and the majority of the game you are fighting, not watching. You are safe to skip the cutscenes here as you will not miss anything. It is truly amazing how Id in less than ten years has made 3 Doom games that are each distinct from another and have their own individual identity. I am guessing that the Dark Ages may be some players favorite entry, just like Eternal and 2016 each has its own fanbase.
