As a kid TMNT was my everything. I played most of the games, read a ton of the comics, and watched all the movies. The developers clearly did the same since this is a love letter to the franchise that respects the source material. TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge is a nostalgia injected return to the awesome beat em ups games of the 90’s. Shredder’s Revenge deepens and modernizes the gameplay while also staying loyal to not only the IP of TMNT but also the general feel of the combat in those games. The combat is accessible and you will be kicking Foot Clan butt in no time. While the combat is simple, the game has specials as well as team attacks. This is a game that begs to be played with a co-op partner and pulling off a team attack will lead to IRL high fives. There are so many little easter eggs for fans in the backgrounds of these levels. I love how the Foot Clan members are often doing mundane things such as typing on computers or eating before you start beating them up. All of the individual turtles play how you imagine they would. The bad guys are all here, you got Shredder, you got Rocksteady and more deep cuts that I won’t spoil. All of these boss battles are well designed and fun. This is a quick playthrough that you can probably beat in a few hours but the game is highly replayable. The developers added a progression system which is not common for a beat ’em up such as this. Each individual character levels up and unlocks more moves, health and so on. There is also online play so you can easily hop on with randoms for some quick fun. Even without the TMNT license behind it, this is a mechanically solid beat ’em up that stands on its own. Play this game. Pizza is on me.
