Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy is an underrated and underappreciated game that if you are a fan of everyone’s favorite ragtag crew of space pirates, this is a must play.  The game is a cross between a narrative heavy, Telltale like game and a 3rd person team based shooter.  As Star Lord, you can only shoot his iconic dual pistols which do not do much damage and order your teammates to defeat enemies.  While the combat is probably the weakest part of the game, the developers made the right choice in nerfing your damage output to make you feel more like the team leader that Star Lord is in the comics and films.  The strongest aspect of this game is the narrative.  This isn’t a rip off of the movies.  These are different takes on the characters you love.  Surprisingly, I prefer some of these takes on these beloved characters over the films.  The portrayal of Mantis specifically is a much more mature take on the character. She feels more like an adult with more complex motivations and emotions than the more innocent and childlike Mantis of the films.  There are a lot of cutscenes and dialogue in this game.  You will be talking to your crew more than you will be engaging in combat.  This might be divisive for some players looking for a more gameplay driven experience but I love narrative based games so this emphasis on story and characters worked for me.  The art design and graphics in this game are stunning and each planet you will visit is unique and I loved taking in all of the sights.  Like the films this game has a great sense of humor and I found myself laughing out loud which is a rare, precious thing for a video game to elicit.  It is too bad that the terrible Avengers game ruined any hype for this game since this is truly an experience you will not want to miss.
