The 3D Mario games continue to innovate with each entry however, the 2D Mario games have been stagnant for close to a decade. I am happy to report that Super Mario Bros. Wonder finally brings back that creativity and innovation to the 2D Mario games in spades. The game brings back this creativity through the implementation of Wonder Seeds which completely change a level and add new mechanics such as suddenly becoming a goomba or the green pipes start to twist and turn in all different directions. The developers clearly were inspired and had loads of ideas for this game and it feels like close to nothing was left on the cutting room floor. With most games feeling safe and risk averse these days, it is refreshing to see a developer as big as Nintendo taking risks and leaning into creative and innovative ideas. The only criticism I feel that I can level at this game is the lack of difficulty in the main campaign levels. I doubt even beginner players will struggle with the campaign. Like many Nintendo platformers the real challenge comes in the post game worlds and some of the levels are extremely challenging. I wish that the game had a more balanced difficulty curve since it goes from being extremely easy to incredibly hard without any levels that prepare you for the challenge of the post game levels. I no longer am on drugs but this game made me feel like I was again in the best of ways.
