Sifu

Do you like the movie Oldboy? Would you be interested in a game that evokes the best action set pieces in that movie without the incest?  If you answered yes to any of these questions, this is the game for you.  In Sifu you are a martial artist on a revenge mission.  The combat in this game is incredibly deep and makes you feel like you are in complete control of your move set.  Sifu is an extremely difficult game that demands mastery in order to complete it. This game asks a lot of you and at times I had to take breaks because my fingers would start to hurt.  The game is actively punishing you through the aging mechanic.  This is where when you die you age.  The more you age, the more damage you deal, however, you take more damage yourself.  Once you hit age 70, it is game over, and you have to start again. There are 5 stages in total and you have to beat them all in one run.  This is essentially a roguelike since you are able to unlock abilities using in game currency to permanently unlock them for future runs.  These abilities mostly are additional combos you can pull off however, they aren’t going to automatically make future runs easier.  They just give you more tools.  I hate the old adage of “git gud “but this game truly is that.  The only way you are going to beat this game is to master the combat and memorize the levels.  Thankfully, the combat is so fun and cinematic that I personally didn’t mind repeating levels over and over again.  The developers recently added an easy mode to the game and I did check it out.  While I appreciate that they added this, the mode is too easy and I wish they found a better middle ground between normal and the new easy mode.  In conclusion, Sifu is a love letter to martial arts movies that has a deep and addicting combat system that will keep you coming back for more.
