After playing the atrocity that was Kirby Star Allies, I had almost lost hope that this franchise that I grew up playing would ever be good again. Thankfully, the Forgotten Land is a great return to form that brings Kirby into the 3D realm. Do not confuse this as Kirby’s version of Super Mario Odyssey. This is a game with a collection of linear levels and does not have the semi open world maps of Odyssey. These levels have an interesting, almost post apocalyptic style to them. Kirby explores all kinds of seemingly abandoned buildings and environments. What happened? I don’t know, it is never explained, but who gives a shit? It’s a Kirby game. The levels are chock full of collectibles and I enjoyed tracking all of them down. The game adds the Mouthful mechanic which allows Kirby to suck up objects and transform into them. These include cars, light bulbs, stairs, and so on. There are some levels that are completely designed around these mouthful transformations, such as using the car transformation to race to the finish on a Mario Kart like track. These transformations are a great new addition to the franchise and I enjoyed playing almost all of them. The game has an impressive amount of post game content. There are several optional post game worlds that greatly increase the challenge. This is classic Nintendo design where the main campaign does not provide much challenge but the post game does. I like this approach to game design and it works great here. Hopefully, the next entry in this franchise doesn’t suck (get it?) ha I’m funny, right?….right?
