While Stray may offer a nice experience for cat owners, as a game it falls flat in almost every aspect. The marketing showed us what it would be like if we were a cat in a post apocalyptic setting where all the humans are dead and replaced with robots. Does it make you feel like a cat? No it doesn’t. The traversal is severely limited and you can only jump where the developers want you to jump. While the visuals are great, you have almost certainly seen a Cyberpunk world like this before. The story is as such, you are a cat, you get separated from your family and now you have to find a way to reunite with them. That’s really it. The puzzles here are almost insultingly simple and require zero critical thinking. There are a few chase sequences to break up the pacing of what is mostly fetch quests but they really aren’t that exciting. The fact that this game got indie game of the year is baffling to me as it does nothing new and really is just a walking simulator only now you’re a cat. Maybe one day we will get the game that was promised and we can walk around freely and do whatever we want as a cat but this ain’t it.
