Dead Island 2

With the rocky history of development for this game I was skeptical that this would be a good game.  Thankfully, it indeed is a good game.  The game has more in common with the Dying Light franchise than with the first entry in the series.  The game is also set in L.A. which I don’t think is an island but ok, lets go.  In all seriousness, choosing L.A. as a setting was a good choice as it leads to a nice satire of the culture in that weird city.  The game is surprisingly funny, in a silly, intentionally stupid way.  The gameplay is simple but fun.  It consists of predominantly melee combat where you can attach elemental powers to such as electricity and fire.  The weapon customization is not as creative as the Dead Rising franchise but it is still fun.  The gore system they implemented is the best part of the game and boy is it brutal.  I don’t think I have ever seen a more realistic depiction of weapon damage to a body in a game.  I found myself testing this system out by hitting the zombies long after they were dead just to see what kind of bloody bits I could create.  I also found myself questioning if I am a sociopath or not while doing this.  I appreciated that the developers decided to go with linear levels instead of a large open world.  These levels are fairly big and have some really cool designs.  The movie set and hotel were the standouts for me. Another surprise this game provides is the almost immersive sim lite nature of the game design.  You can lure zombies into a pool, throw a battery in it, and watch them fry.  You can use gas to spread all over a map, then light it on fire.  None of this is that complex or ambitious but it is still a fun addition to the franchise. This isn’t a long game. I completed the main story and all side quests in about 20 to 25 hours.  This is a positive as right when I was getting sick of the combat, the game ended.  While I wish the game had a more in depth weapon customization system, this game is far better than it had any reason to be.
