Still Wakes the Deep is a first person narrative horror game. You are a worker on an oil rig and shit is about to go down. Really weird Lovecraftian shit. The game is essentially a cross between a walking simulator and an Outlast like hide and seek game. The Lovecraftian horror is turning all of your co workers into gross monsters. You have no weapons to defend yourself, so you have to hide. This is where my largest criticism of the game is. The monster is not smart like the alien in Alien Isolation or the enemies in Outlast so you simply have to hide under something, wait for it to pass, and run to the next hiding space. Even if the monster sees you, it cannot get to where you are in any circumstance other than a couple scripted chase sequences. The voice acting is really strong, with a story about a crumbling marriage and a protagonist that struggles with anger to the point of self sabotage. The game flashes back to life with the protagonists wife, how he came to work on the rig, and how he is escaping his life by working on it. The graphics and art design is impressive. The rig looks real, and the characters feel real. This game thrives on creating a sense of place, I just wish the gameplay was a bit more compelling. Disclaimer: if you are sensitive to curse words of the Scottish variety, avoid this game at all costs. See you next Tuesday.
