Immortals: Fenyx Rising

Immortals is a rare example of a modern Ubisoft game that I feel like I can fully recommend.  It has a fun, colorful open world filled with puzzles and dungeons.  It mostly avoids the Ubisoft bloat that plagues most of their games.  You can beat the main story in about 20 hours if you mainline it, but there are tons of optional things to do in this world.  While the story isn’t anything great, I did enjoy the voice overs of the two gods narrating your adventure.  I was worried this feature would get annoying after awhile but it didn’t.  The God’s narrating throughout your entire journey through this open world is unique and I thought it set a goofy and fun tone for the game.  I can see this aspect of the game being divisive, as I think many will find this narrative choice grating.  The gameplay is derivative of Breath of the Wild with puzzle dungeons scattered across the world and the ability to climb anywhere you want with a stamina wheel you can increase.  Thankfully, Immortals does not rip off BoTW’s weapon degradation system.  The puzzles in the open world are short, simple, and fun however, after several hours of play you realize that they mostly boil down to pushing a crate somewhere, putting symbols in the correct order etc.  When I first started the game I had this feeling of wanting to complete every puzzle in the world however, towards the 20 hour mark I saw behind the matrix and was no longer interested in completing them all.  The main dungeons are more in depth however, they do suffer from the same simplistic puzzle design of the open world.  The combat here is solid but nothing remarkable. The biomes are diverse and colorful.  They each have their own story, characters, and aesthetic. It saddens me that they cancelled the sequel to this game since this is easily the most interesting and well made game Ubisoft has made in years.
