I am mostly a single player gamer and what I saw of the gameplay of Helldivers 2, it looked like dumb, mindless multiplayer fun. While it does become a little mindless after playing for several hours, I was pleasantly surprised that this game had more depth in its gameplay than I was expecting. The game gives you stratagems that you can call down using button combos that range from air strikes, to special weapons. The button combos needed to use these strategems are simple yet, when a mass of enemies is coming towards, things can get a bit tricky. Helldivers 2 is not just a horde base shooter, it is objective based. None of these objectives are in depth however, it does add more complexity and adds an element of teamwork that other horde based shooters lack. The game also encourages you to find resources which unlock upgrades to your ship that you drop if you die. When you respawn it can be an intense, almost dark souls inspired corpse run to get those precious materials back. The game has a great sense of humor in both its story and emergent moments that happen frequently such as accidentally dropping a strategem on your teammate. I played this game almost entirely with randoms and the game has enough communication tools where you don’t have to use a mic to succeed. The community is mostly friendly and there were multiple players that helped onboard me. I strongly believe that having a group of friends will contribute to the longevity of this game. I put between 15 and 20 hours into this game and I will say that the gameplay loop does become stale. If you are one of those people that have friends, unlike me, strap your boots up, clench your butt cheeks, and go fight for democracy!
