Starfield

Writing a review of Starfield almost feels as much of a slog as it is to play this game. I feel this way because it is difficult to come up with any positive things to say about it.  With Starfield, Bethesda seems to forget what made the Elder Scrolls and Fallout series so appealing. Gone are the gigantic open worlds where you explore, find secrets, complete quests with solid writing and have the overall feeling that you are immersed in an interesting world that feels lived in. Starfield boasts that there are a 1000 planets yet only about 5 planets are curated, the rest are randomly generated, boring, bland, and simply not worth exploring.  These planets have the same points of interest, and never offer anything interesting or useful.  If you are to play this game, I recommend you focus on the faction and main quests.  None of these quest lines are particularly interesting however, they at least take place mostly on the curated planets.  The best part of Starfield is the ship building.  It is in depth, fairly intuitive, and it is fun to make silly ships that look dumb. I guess you could make some cool ships here but I chose silliness over coolness. The base building is functional, and I can see people having fun with it; however, it really doesn’t impact the gameplay in any way nor does it provide you with anything that is beneficial.  The crafting system is annoying and I mostly ignored the mechanic entirely.  The gunplay is serviceable but uninteresting.  The space travel is incredibly disappointing as it is essentially just a fast travel system that will put you in right in front of the planet you are traveling to.  The space combat is functional and surprisingly challenging. In conclusion if you are a fan of Bethesda games, Starfield will disappoint you and it is a baffling miss for a once great studio.  Hopefully Elder Scrolls 6 is good but my mortal coil may be already shed before that game comes out.
