God of War: Ragnarok

All reviews contain bias, this review contains a lot of it so read at your own peril.  Many people would and have called GoWR a great game, I’ve heard the word masterpiece thrown around in talks about this game however, in my opinion GoWR is by far the worst God of War game and I am not forgetting about Ascension.  My main issue with this game is not its gameplay (it’s solid) but with its narrative of which I think the writing is terminal.  The game starts of strong with the somber and mature tone of its predecessor however, it quickly trades this tone for what I consider an MCUnification of the franchise.  There are constant quips and jokes and the vast majority of them are not funny. In fact, this style of writing is completely immersion breaking because the constant attempts at humor simply do not fit in this universe.  There is constant dialogue, most of it either uninteresting, or downright cringe to the point I was wishing for a setting to make these characters just shut up. I wanted silence or some level of restraint and I never got it.  This issue carries over to the puzzle design.  The game will tell you the solution to the puzzle mere minutes after it is presented to you.  There were multiple times in the game where I was solving the puzzle and Atreus chimes in and tells me what to do when I am already in the process of doing it. The developers of this game do not respect your intelligence and they give you no options to turn these hints off.  The combat remains strong.  It is relatively simple but it is still fun and responsive. The introduction of a new weapon is a great and really fun addition to the combat.  The graphics and overall presentation are stellar from a technical perspective and there are some really cool and memorable set pieces here but the narrative brings everything down.  The ending is not satisfying nor memorable. I hope for the next entry they return to the tone of GoW 2018 and leave whatever this style of writing was in the dust.
