Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

Full disclosure, I am a huge Final Fantasy fan and the FF7 Remake is in my top ten favorite games of all time so it pains me to write that I absolutely hated this game and I truly believe you can completely skip this entry and not miss much going into the concluding chapter of this remake trilogy.  Rebirth throws away the great pacing of the first entry in service of a bloated open world game that is constantly throwing forced, mostly terrible minigames at you.  The open world activities are simply not fun and make Ubisoft games look creative by comparison. The story is drawn out to the extreme where nothing interesting happens for 90% of the experience.  There are moments here but they are so few and far between that it didn’t feel worth it to me. This game is filler heaped onto more filler in both gameplay and story.  The addition of team attacks impacts the combat in a negative way because it forces you to constantly swap between characters instead of playing how you want to. The difficulty is ramped up here compared to the first one but it causes more frustration than fun. I did hate this game however, I will not claim it is bad as I think many players will eat this game up and the small character moments may get them through the experience.  I personally hope Square abandons the open world formula, tightens up the narrative, and returns to the more simple, less convoluted combat system of the first game for the third entry in this remake trilogy.
